      There is an expectation that we will keep on learning and developing as practitioners. That we will grow in confidence and expertise moving from just qualified to expert in a seemingly smooth transition. Unfortunately like many things in life developing as a professional is not that simple, this paper looks at how we develop as learners and professionals and some of the complexities behind many a learning journey. There will be a number of learning activities attached to this paper some will be appropriate for individuals to undertake, others are more aimed at managers and senior managers and others could be used as themes for departmental discussions or even regional meetings.

      One of the significant tools for supporting continuing professional development (CPD) is the Institute of Medical Illustrators (IMI) owned publication the Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine. Other journals, for example the Journal of Biological Photography, The British Journal of Photography, British Medical Journal and specialist journals associated with specific areas of medicine, education and illustration, are also helpful. The aim of this paper is to look at journals and CPD together with activities to help you engage with current literature, practice and research. If you look at the examples of CPD activities suggested by both IMI and the Health Professions Council (HPC) one of the recurring themes is the role of journals (Table 1). Journals, alongside conferences, regional and national meetings, are key means of dissemination of research and support for professional development.

      This Learning and CPD sheet is designed to pull together into a framework many of the activities that have already been published. It should also help anyone planning to go for audit of their CPD or who have been requested to submit for audit. There are a number of different ways of viewing the Personal Development Planning (PDP) or CPD cycle; the one covered here is just one example and shouldn't be seen as the only way of looking at PDP.       The idea that if you listen to a lecture and make notes you will, by some mysterious process, have learnt all that the lecturer has covered, is a myth. Unfortunately, the lecture is just the start. The best way to learn is by doing. This can be achieved by completing set practical tasks by reading and creating your own notes, listening again to parts or the whole of a lecture via a screencast or using diagrams and illustrations that you annotate. Similarly creating your own learning materials can be useful as actually putting questions and answers together helps you to learn. One of the many ways to support your learning, especially in difficult topics like anatomy and physiology, learning about bones, medical terminology or indeed any subject where there are a lot of new words and terms to learn, is making use of an old technique brought up to date with new technologies called "flashcards".
